HARLOW: Traffic measures planned to ease congestion
A SERIES of measures are planned to alleviate the severe congestion suffered daily on Harlow roads.
Harlow MP Bill Rammell, Harlow Renaissance and Harlow Council have successfully lobbied for over £400,000 funding from Growth Area Funding III to combat congestion problems.
It is also anticipated that the money will be supplemented by extra funding from Essex County Council.
It is anticipated that the work will begin in early autumn.
While the exact specification for the congestion-busting measures has yet to be agreed, priorities include improving Fifth Avenue leading from Harlow Town Station into the centre of the town, and improving access on the A414-M11 junction at Junction 7.
Mr Rammell said: "I'm delighted that Harlow's traffic congestion will finally be a thing of the past. I recognise that congestion is a priority for constituents, particularly those who use their cars to drive to work.
"With 16,000 new homes planned in Harlow, I will continue to lobby for the added infrastructure necessary to keep this town moving."
Joint Harlow Council leader Tony Durcan (Labour) said: "This is exactly the sort of positive change that Harlow needs. The town has long experienced problems with bottle-necks and a poor welcome to the town from the train station. It will be fantastic for the residents of Harlow to be able to drive on the roads without fear of extreme congestion."
Joint council leader Chris Millington (Liberal Democrat) said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Harlow and will make some much needed improvements in the town."
Harlow Council's Conservative group leader Andrew Johnson said: "People are always telling me that they're fed up with Harlow traffic. Hopefully this money will go some way in the short term towards helping with the traffic problems that we face. However I believe the best long term way to alleviate our traffic problems is to build another junction on the M11."
Harlow Renaissance chief executive Andrew Bramidge also welcomed the funding as vital for the town's regeneration:
"I welcome the new funding which will enable us to improve immediate traffic conditions for Harlow's residents and businesses as the first stage in developing long term improvements to Harlow's transport needs."
